Mah Jong

We meet in each other’s houses on Friday mornings to play this fascinating game, so numbers are limited. Mah Jongg is unique in that novices and seasoned players can play together in groups of three or four. A tile-based game of skill, strategy and calculation, it involves a degree of chance, though unlike the Chinese, we don’t gamble on the outcome! Using dragons, winds, flowers & seasons, Mah Jongg has colourfully named games such as Gathering Plum Blossom from the Roof, Four Blessings Hovering over the Door and Plucking the Moon from the Bottom of the Sea. It originated in China centuries ago and is still played widely throughout East and South East Asia. Imported to the West in the 1920s, it has seen a revival of interest here in recent years.

Traditionally our group has celebrated Chinese New Year with lunch out, but we are varying the experience this year, as we did in 2024, by having a take-away in the host-of-the-week’s house for the Year of the Snake. The Chinese have a twelve-year cycle, using the animals representing their signs of the zodiac to wish everyone ‘Gung hei fa choi’ (prosperity for the coming year) - the Mandarin equivalent of our ‘Happy New Year’ greeting. (The Cantonese version is slightly different, I’m told.)

The group is full at the moment.
