The weather forecast for the day of our visit to Sheffield Park and Gardens in East Sussex, promised strong winds and rain, but having checked with the NT, we set off and the weather conditions calmed and became dry, so our meandering through the woodlands and enjoying the mirror image of the colourful lakeside landscape, was absolutely joyful.
At Sheffield Park the vivid autumn planting is regarded as being of international importance and it is now Grade 1 listed.
Arthur Soames was the owner during the early 20th century, and he introduced many of the species which create this spectacle, including Nyssa, Acer and Taxodiums.
“The garden is a horticultural work of art, formed through centuries of landscape design, with influences of ‘Capability’ Brown and Humphry Repton. Four lakes form its heart, with paths circulating through the glades and wooded areas surrounding them. Each owner has left their impression, which can still be seen today.”
